with eyes open wide
Although this article is incredibly controversial, I think the author (Gabriel Arana) brings up excellent points about the general ethnicities working in the media. He focuses on liberal media, since that’s the genre in which he works, but it could possibly be said for many other genres too.
The fact is, very few minorities work in the media. There are multiple reasons for this and Gabriel does a great job explaining them in his article (link below).
But the bigger picture is, we are missing a HUGE voice by not hearing from ethnic minorities. The media affects us in many ways since it is the main avenue for gaining any sort of information about news and events. I use “media” as a very broad term for all types – television, newspaper, magazine, online articles, blogs, etc. Each author brings his or her own background and experience into their unique piece, so it’s important to consistently hear from different ethnicities rather than always hearing the “white” point of view.
What’s your take? I’d love to hear other opinions.
