Check this out: Ted Talk – Gary Slutkin: Let’s treat violence like a contagious disease

Gary Slutkin is an amazing role model. Ok, I haven’t delved into his personal life (and don’t plan to!), so don’t take that statement too seriously. But the work he has done combating epidemics in Africa and now violence in Chicago is remarkable.

I completely buy into his program to treat violence like an epidemic. I was SHOCKED when he mentioned that they came up against a lot of criticism. I guess this is simply another reminder of how close-minded humans can be…

If we have been treating violence WITH violence for centuries (war, death penalty, cold hard prisons, long sentences with very little to no rehabilitation), maybe we should take some wise advice from many great non-violent leaders and learn that more violence is not the solution.
