Icon Person: Tavi Gevinson of ‘Rookie’

Isn’t it great to see young feminists who realize the importance of a woman’s voice?

This 17 year old is Tavi Gevinson, founder of the online magazine for teenage girls Rookie. Her mission? To empower teenage girls to create community with others so that they feel more accepted for who they really are and work together toward a static goal.

This is a discussion which we don’t hear often, but it’s true that teenage girls around the world are burdened with many many pressures from many different angles.

I’m not talking about the growing responsibilities that a teenager has. I’m talking about societal pressures to dress a certain way, act a certain way, do a certain thing, achieve such and such, and altogether BE something that she might not be.

In this age of individualism, it’s kinda scary to see how much our society inspires girls to all be the same.

So I applaud Tavi for stepping forward to do something to counter this zombie-like teenage girl population. I wish I had had this resource when I was a teenager!
