Best vacation ever. Hit me up if you are thinking of traveling there and I’ll give you some advice!

Onto more boring topics.. 😉

Fight Over Minimum Wage Illustrates Web of Industry Ties (NY Times) – I’m really quite appalled at the lethargy of the American people to do something about the damaging industry ties to our democracy and entire political system. This article is just another example of what goes on behind the smoke screen. When will it stop??

1. 80,000 Americans Suffer From a Cruel and Unusual Practice Most Countries Abolished (Policy Mic) – I almost want to make a new section on my website dedicated to the topic of Prisons in America. Thankfully there has been a lot of media coverage in the last few years about the cruelties of our prison and justice system. Groups are starting to form organisations to finally study these issues and hopefully bring about needed solutions. This article is specifically about Solitary Confinement and how damaging it is to a person. It’s a great read and provides lots of good statistics and research backing it’s claims.

2. Inside a Mental Hospital Called Jail (NY Times) – Another huge problem facing the U.S. prison system is the disproportionally high number of people suffering from mental diseases. Instead of giving sick individuals the proper help that they deserve, we continually lock them up with virtually no treatment or rehabilitation.

1. Putting Meat on the Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production in America (.pdf, Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production) – The Pew Commission is a well-respected organization created to recommend solutions to the problems created by the concentrated animal feeding operations. This document is their executive summary released in 2008 after 2.5 years of research on this subject matter. We are in 2014 and the problems still persists and have probably worsened (here’s a quick Google search on current academic articles with the words “confined animal feeding operations”).

2. CAFOs Uncovered (.pdf, Union of Concerned Scientists) – This is another long and detailed document published in 2008 concerning the confined animal feeding operations. It’s very long and in-depth, so I would only recommend it if you have a high interest in this subject.

Mikko Hypponen is my hero. This talk is the real deal on what’s happening in cyberspace right now and how the American government in particular has recruited and trained the best and brightest to manipulate the system to their advantage. Though I don’t quite agree with his solution at the end (too implausible), he is still the leader in this industry and we should look to him for inspiration.

Ben Goldacre is a doctor I would trust. In this TED talk, he unearths the biggest problem in healthcare – restricted access of all the data. It may sound unbelievable to you, but many studies are not sound for a multitude of scientific reasoning. Dr. Goldacre’s talk spills the beans.

Alessandro Acquisti will turn your world around. This talk is for everyone, but especially for those those don’t think that the NSA gathering all of this information is a big deal. THINK AGAIN!
